The project is located in the mountainous town of HuiPing, China, a remote village of tea production. The library is located on the side of the main road in the village that connects the government building to the local school. The typography of the site allows the library to open up in the back facing the tea farms with a stepped-down reading room. The architecture of local style constructed in wood and stone provides a place for local students to access education chances through this multimedia reading room that is connected with the area’s schools. The library also has a tea room that opens to the plaza in the front to provide leisure activities for the local residents and tourists that are attracted to the calm lifestyle of the village.
The library uses local construction materials: traditional Chinese tiles, rammed earth, and bamboo, with the introduction of glass to allow transparency and continuity to the surrounding nature. The form is inspired by vernacular housing with sloped tiled roof, which is a solution to the humid and rainy summer. It also allows the library to blend into the local culture and environment.
